W.T.O (WORLD TRADE ORG)
There is no economic activity in the world which will remain unaffected by World Trade Organisation and its agreements. It is generally believed that W.T.O. is related to industries or the people who are engaged in industrial trade. But WTO is equally important for farmers, scientists, doctors, singers, writers etc. To safe-guard the interests of Indian MSMEs, it is very important to make them aware about the challenges of WTO in a country like India.
 
Some Facts about WTO :

The World Trade Organisation (are into being in 1995 in Marrakesh, as a successor to the General Agreements on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) established after the second world war. The secretarial is based at Geneva.

WTO has more than 150 members accounting for over 90 percent of world trade.
»
While the GATT the updated version remains the principal rule-book for trade in goods.Uruguay round and the new rules for dealing with trade in services intellectual property and dispute settlement and trade policy reviews.

All WTO decisions are taken by the entire membership, typically by consensus though a majority vote can be taken, it has not happened since WTO replaced GATT, the top decision making level is the Ministerial conference.

At the heart of the system-known as the multilateral trading systems-are to WTO's agreements, negotiated and signed by the members. The complete set of rules runs into approximately 30,000 pages and consists to agreements and commitments (technically called schedules).

To make the Indian MSMEs aware (to facilitate clear and comprehensive understanding of WTO), MSME Development Institute, Karnal regularly organizes WTO Sensitization Workshops. The duration may be from one to two days depending upon the programme and the need felt.
